Questions to ask a Wedding DJ

Before you hire your DJ as part of the interview process here are some questions you can ask the DJ to get a better idea of what kind of DJ they are.

How long have you been DJ'ing Weddings?

This is one of the most important questions to ask your DJ before your wedding. It's necessary to know just how long they've been in the industry—a pro with more experience will be able to effortlessly execute your vision.  This also helps to identify the bar or club DJ's from a DJ that mainly does Weddings.

    What's your performance style like?

With this question you are looking to identify whether they are a DJ that talks alot during your event or do they focus on the music and getting people to dance.  This comes in handy to identify if you are hiring a DJ that likes to hear themselves speak or a DJ that is focused on you and only speaks when needed which is typically the preference especially with events like Weddings.  You don't want a DJ talking too much during a wedding.

Will the DJ work with you on special dances?

With a wedding you have many special moments you will need a certain song played, certain announcements made and some DJ's may not be okay with altering their playlist or they aren't into being an emcee.  This is important to know in advance.

Can we give you a list of must-hear songs? What about a do-not-play list?

In order to create the setlist you want, ask your potential DJ if you can give them a list of your musical preferences.  Clients are also encouraged to share various lists with us, like must-play songs, songs to play if possible, dedications, songs to play only if requested, and a do not play list.

Will you take song requests from our guests during the event?

Some DJs may prefer to have a final setlist in advance, while others might be open to taking requests throughout the wedding reception.

What's included in your pricing package?

The cost of a wedding DJ often depends on how long they'll perform, as well as any additional add-ons, like lights or emcee services. Ask what kind of packages they offer so you know exactly what you'll receive with your payment.

Does your contract include an overtime clause in case we want to extend the party?

When your reception comes to a close, you might be tempted to keep the party going—and we don't blame you! But it's important to confirm if your wedding entertainment contract includes an overtime clause.

    Do you have backup equipment?

During your hiring process, ask if they have backup equipment they'll be bringing to the event in case of equipment failure. It's important to know that your selected DJ is prepared for any issue that might arise which may include a backup DJ in the event something comes up like the DJ you hired gets sick.

Will you coordinate a soundcheck at the wedding venue on the day of?

Most—if not all—wedding entertainers will need a soundcheck on the morning of the wedding to check equipment and confirm that everything is good to go. Ask a potential DJ if they'll take the lead on coordinating this with your venue.

    Do you have liability insurance?

While this answer will most likely be yes, this is still one of the top questions to ask your DJ for your wedding.  DJ equipment is heavy and if any of it fell on a guest, the bride and groom could be sued if the DJ is uninsured.

    What's your cancellation policy?

Whether you change your date or change your mind on the music, know what your options are in case you need to cancel your entertainment.

How do you encourage a shy crowd to get up and dance?

If you want a packed dance floor all night long, your DJ will play a major role in keeping guests on their feet. This is one of the best questions to ask your wedding DJ because it separates the pros from the rookies. See what their techniques are for keeping energy levels high—perhaps they have a go-to song that always gets everyone moving, or maybe they like to interact with the crowd to keep them engaged. Regardless of their approach, this question will help you confirm that your pro will make your party one to remember.

For music do you use Vinyl, CD's or are you all Digital?

If the DJ says they use Vinyl or CD's it means you are limited to what they have on hand.  With digital music, the DJ can bring so much more music and can quickly find music as requests come in.  Also with Digital, the DJ can download a song, as long as you have internet access, when a VIP requests a song the DJ doesn't have.

    • I still use my Allen & Heath ZED10fx which works great for small gig that they want to use a couple mics, guitar, drums OR if you are just playing music from your laptop via the USB connection. I carry it around with its power cord in a thomson hard flight case.  Its light and I can leave the mixer in the case if I prefer.
    • Here is a overdue follow up on how the EVERSE 8 is...   one word..  awesome! PLENTY of sound and lasts hours and hours and hours.  Great sound and perfect for a ceremony or small get together of 30 or less Bluetooth worked awesome so I played music from my iPad running djay software.  I also plugged into the audio input jack a battery powered lapel mic and that worked great as well.  For portable or small jobs, you really can't go wrong with this EV speaker.
    • I went off the deep end..   I purchased the DENON DJ Prime Go and I actually really like it.
